Steve Roberts
Steve is a prominent bass player on the Southampton scene with over 40 years’ experience playing a diverse variety of styles from reggae, soul to rock, funk, blues and jazz. Most often seen playing Fender basses but occasionally an acoustic or electric upright.
In the late 80s he was in the very successful Bob Pearce Blues Band line up which was contracted to Blue Horizon records and the successful album “HEY! HEY! The Blues Is Alright” recorded & produced by Mike Vernon was released. This album accrued much acclaim from “Paul Jones” whose radio show voted it top live blues album in the UK in 1991.
During this time the band were frequently contracted to JSP records to provide a backing band for the many American Blues artists touring the UK including: Mo Jo Buford(Muddy Waters band), Lowell Fulson(Gave Ray Charles his first break), Byther Smith(Otis Rush), Rocking Tabby Thomas (King of the Swamp Water Blues), Carey & Lurrie Bell, Louisiana Red(John Lee Hooker), Gene Conners “Mighty Flea”(Ray Charles, Johnny Otis), Phil Guy, Lefty Dizz(Junior Wells) & Jerry McCain.
This pedigree makes him one of the most experienced blues bassists in the South. (Even Status Quo’s bass player once offered to stand in for him!) Christened “Old Funky Fingers” by Bob and renowned for outrageously loud shirts,he can still be found like an elusive “Shadow” laying down some very solid grooves in various rhythm sections around the local scene.
